A guide to setting up and using Mendeley bibliographic software

What is Mendeley?

Mendeley is a reference management software platform that is owned by Elsevier and is available as both an online and desktop application which automatically sync.

With Mendeley you can:

  • Create store and search bibliographic references in personal reference Collections (up to 2GB for free)
  • Share bibliographic references with colleagues and collaborators (up to 100MB for free)
  • Search online databases and journals and import references directly into your Collections
  • Automatically build and format bibliographies into Word documents for publishing articles, submitting grants, and keeping your C.V. current
  • Access your PDFs on the move whether online or offline. Highlight, annotate, and add sticky notes to capture your comments. 

The desktop application can be downloaded on systems with the following:

  • Windows
  • MacOS
  • Linux

The Mendeley Web Importer works with the following browsers:

  • Chrome
  • Firefox
  • Edge
  • Safari

Mendeley has a plugin (called Mendeley Cite) to insert citations directly into:

  • Microsoft Word (Desktop & 360)
  • LibreOffice
