If you have the PDF of a reference, you can simply drag and drop the file into your Mendeley library and it will use the metadata to populate the reference information. It is good practice to double-check the information after you do this to check for errors and missing information. You can do this for entire folders of articles as well.
Step 1. Navigate to the source that you would like to save to your Mendeley library. Find the Mendeley Web Importer icon in your browser and click it.
Step 2. A pop-up will appear where you can specify which collection(s)/folder(s) you wish to put the source. You often have the option to import other citations from the page as well. Once you have selected the source(s) you wish to import, click the "Add" button. Mendeley will also download the PDF of the source if it is available to you.
Step 3. Check your Mendeley library to make sure the source was downloaded. It is also good practice to review the citation information to make sure that the information looks complete and correct. This way, when you are citing the source down the road, you do not have to go back and correct the entry.
Step 1. You can also import sources in Mendeley by searching by various identifiers such as the PMID, DOI, and ISBN. To do this, click "Add New" and select "Add reference manually".
Step 2. Next, input the identifier and search for the metadata. If metadata are found, it will import into the entry. It is good practice to double check the citation information for errors and missing information so that you will not have to do it later. Once the information is correct, click "Add entry".
Mendeley will let you specify one folder on your computer from which to automatically import publications; when you download new literature, you can always place the documents into this folder, and Mendeley will populate the citation and attach the document.
To do this, click "Add new" in the Mendeley desktop application. Then click "Watch folder..." from the dropdown menu.
Next, click the "Choose folder to watch" button and specify which folder on your device. Then, you should be all set up.
