Mendeley: Citation

A guide to setting up and using Mendeley bibliographic software

Overview

Mendeley Cite allows for you to insert in-text citations and bibliography into your Microsoft Word documents, including the Word application in the browser via Office 360. You do not have to have the Mendeley Desktop application to use Mendeley Cite, but you do have to have a Mendeley library through the online application

Insert In-Text Citations

Step 1a. When writing in Microsoft Word, you can insert in-text citations by first navigating to the "References" tab of the top toolbar and clicking the "Mendeley Cite" icon. 

Step 1b. A box will open on the right side of the screen. Click "Get Started". 

Step 1c. A box will open, asking you to log in to your Elsevier account. Follow the prompts to log in to your account. 

Step 2. The Mendeley Cite box will now populate with your references. You can now set the citation style for your document and begin inserting your in-text citations.  

Step 3a. To set the citation style for the document, click the "Citation Settings" tab in the Mendeley Cite plugin. 

Step 3b. Click the "Change citation style" button. 

Step 3c. They will have several of the most commonly-used citation styles listed. You also have the option to "Search for another style" and "Add a custom style". 

 

Step 4a. Now that you have selected your citation style, click back to the References tab in the Mendeley Cite plugin. Find the place in your document where you would like to insert your citation, and find the reference in Mendeley Cite. Then, click "Insert citation". 

Step 4b. The in-text citation will appear in your document. You can click the citation towards the bottom of the Mendeley Cite plugin to make modifications to the citation like adding page numbers. If you do this, be sure to click "Save changes" at the bottom. 

Insert Bibliography

You can insert the references for your Bibliography section by clicking on the ellipses "..." icon in Mendeley Cite and clicking "Insert Bibliography". 

Your Bibliography will then appear in your document and update as you add references.
