A comprehensive exploration of the myriad bioinformatics tools, resources, and databases currently available is far beyond the scope of this LibGuide. However, at the CSHL Library and Archives, it is our goal to provide up-to-date introductory resources and targeted links to provide our scientists and research staff with the information they require to explore this dynamic field.
Some Definitions
According to BISTI, the NIH Biomedical Information Science and Technology Initiative Consortium, Bioinformatics uses research, development, or application of computational tools and approaches for expanding the use of biological, medical, behavioral or health data, including those to acquire, store, organize, archive, analyze, or visualize such data.
BISTI similarly defines Computational Biology as the development and application of data-analytical and theoretical methods, mathematical modeling and computational simulation techniques to the study of biological, behavioral, and social systems.
Next Generation Sequencing ( NGS ), also referred to as NextGen Sequencing or high-throughput sequencing, is a catch-all term for several new sequencing strategies that all perform nucleotide sequencing with significantly greater speed and reliability than traditional Sanger sequencing.
The Bioinformatics Shared Resource (BSR) at CSHL is a lab-wide resource for biological data analysis. It is located in the top floor of the QUICK building in room 4426.
