A guide to using protocols.io: CSHL's newest way to store and disseminate protocols

Easy to hard

In the following video, protocols.io CEO Leny Teytelman presents a few methods of uploading existing protocols to your account without having to manually retype all of the information.

How to upload a protocol

As outlined in the video to the left, there are several methods for uploading existing protocols to protocols.io. You may not have the time or staffing to upload each protocol from scratch. Fortunately, protocols.io offers several upload methods that will allow you to bypass the manual input step.

  1. Simply drag and drop the file into your workspace. protocols.io will accept files in any format. You will not be able to edit this protocol, but it will be available for download and can be shared publicly and with collaborators.
  2. Create a new protocol and attach your existing protocol as an attachment. Again, any file type will be accepted. If using this method, filling out some metadata such as tags and an abstract will go a long way to making your protocol more searchable and accessible. These protocols can also be shared with collaborators and publicly
  3. Create a new protocol and use the "input steps from text file" dialog located in the center of the page (the text is small and can be easy to miss). You would then be able to edit each step using the custom tools in protocols.io. Protocols can then be shared.
  4. Use the We Enter Protocols tool. Protocol uploads start at $50 per protocol. However if you have very many protocols to upload and limited time, this can be an excellent option. Members of the protocols.io team upload the protocol, and perform quality control to make sure that no errors were introduced during the upload process.
