Step 1. Navigate to the ORCID Website and sign in. Once you have signed in, you will be taken to an overview of your current ORCID record. Here is an example:
a. To update your employment, find the "Employment" heading under activities and click the add button on the right side.
b. You will then be asked to fill in the information about the Organization, Details, and Visibility of the role. For additional, information about the Employment fields, please visit this link to ORCID support. Once you have filled in this information. Click "Save changes" at the bottom of the pop-up box.
Find the "Education and qualifications" heading on the main dashboard page and click the add button.
Fill in the information on Organization, Details, and Visibility. For more information about fields for Education and qualifications, please visit this ORCID support link. Once you have completed the field, click "Save changes" at the bottom of the box.
Find the "Funding" heading on the main ORCID dashboard and click add. You will then have the option to Search & link funding or Add funding manually.
Click the "Search & link" option to add funding and select "DimensionsWizard" in the list of options.
You might have to authorize access to DimensionsWizard if you are using it for the first time.
You can then search for your grants by either your name of the grant title.
If you cannot find your awards in the grant linking tool, you can always add them manually by selecting this option. Then you will be asked to fill in information about your funding details, agency, identifiers, and visibility. For more information, about the specific fields, please visit this link to the ORCID support site. Once you have completed these fields, then click "Save changes" at the bottom of the box.
Works are your research outputs, including your publications, data sets, and conference presentations. There are several options to add works to your profile. You can do this by finding the "Works" heading on the dashboard and clicking "Add".
This option lets you search and add your works from a variety of databases, such as Scopus and Datacite. Once you select the "Search & link" option, you will be taken to a page to select the database you wish to search. Select the database.
If this is the first time you are using this tool through ORCID, you will need to authorize access.
You will then be asked to find your name and/or works in the database to be included in your ORCID profile. Here is an example from SCOPUS:
You also have the option to include the work by searching for the DOI. Click this option, input the DOI information, and then click "Retrieve work details from DOI".
You will then be able to verify and fill in the work details, citation, identifiers, contributors, other information, and visibility for this work. Once you have filled these in, click "Add this work to your ORCID record".
You also have the option to import a work from PubMed using the PubMed ID number. You can find this information by locating the publication in PubMed. The PMID will generally appear just below the authors and their affiliations. Here is an example:
Copy the PMID, select the "Add PubMed ID" option in ORCID to add works, and then paste the PMID into the window. Then, click "Retrieve work details from PubMed.
You will then be able to verify and fill in the work details, citation, identifiers, contributors, other information, and visibility for this work. Once you have filled these in, click "Add this work to your ORCID record".

You also have the option to input the information about a work manually. To do this, select the "Add Manually" option. You will then be able to verify and fill in the work details, citation, identifiers, contributors, other information, and visibility for this work. Once you have filled these in, click "Save changes".
You can connect your ORCID iD to other organization's systems to allow for automatic updating and verification of your information. You are asked to authorize trusted organizations when you connect your ORCID iD to their system. For more information about the permissions that you can grant to organizations, please visit this ORCID support page. To view your currently-connected Trusted Organizations, click your name in the top right corner and select "Trusted Parties". You can view and modify each organization's access through this page.
You can also specify trusted individuals that have an ORCID account to modify your records as a delegate. Please note: you do not have to be a researcher to be a trusted individual, but you do need to have an ORCID account. You can search for, add, and delete trusted individuals by clicking your name at the top right corner and selecting the "Trusted parties" option.
Underneath the Trusted Organizations information, you can then view, modify, search for, and add trusted individuals to your account. You can also see any other ORCID users that have made you a trusted individual as well.
NIH policy requires that all senior/key personnel, listed on an application for a due date on or after May 25, 2025, must have a linked ORCID ID to their eRA Commons Profile. Here is how to link your ORCID ID to your eRA Commons account.
Step 1. Log into your eRA Commons Account.
Step 2. Once logged in, select the "Personal Profile" tile on the left side of the home dashboard screen.
Step 3. Under the "Personal Profile" box on the top left of the screen, select "Create or Connect your ORCID iD".
Step 4. Next, you will be prompted to log into your ORCID profile or create an account.
Step 5. Once you have logged into or created your account, you will be prompted to authorize access to your ORCID account. Click "Authorize Access".
Your ORCID iD will then appear in your Personal Profile page in eRA Commons.
