Zotero: Citation

A guide to setting up and using the Zotero bibliographic software

Adding Styles to Your Library

Step 1. When you download and install Zotero, many of the common citation styles will automatically import into the program. However, you might need to import specific styles for your field or a particular journal. To add a new style to your Zotero library navigate to your desktop application, click "Edit" in the top toolbar, and then click "Settings".

Step 2. Click the "Cite" option on the left side of the Settings menu. This will bring up your current styles library. To add a new style, click the "Get additional styles..." link.

Step 3. A new window will open with the Zotero Style Repository where you can search for the style you want. Once you find the style, you simply click it to install it in your library. If you cannot find the style you are looking for, please consult the Zotero support documentation for alternative installation methods for styles

It should then appear in your style manager in the application for you to use for future citation.

Quickly Copying a Citation

Zotero also gives you the option to quickly copy a citation in a specific style without integration with a word processor. To do this, right click on the source that you wish to cite in your Zotero library. Then, click "Create Bibliography from Item...".

You will then be asked to select a style and the format of your citation.
