Introduction

There are a number of different databases available to determine how many times an article has been cited by other articles.

Both Scopus and Web of Science can be used to find this information. Google scholar can also provide this information.  Keep in mind the number of citations of each of these databases will be different because of the way they pull the citation information.

Below we will provide instructions on how to use the databases to gather this information

How To Find the number of Citations on Scopus

  1. Go to the CSHL Library website.
  2. From there you can click on Resources.
  3. Then click on Databases & Protocols.
  4. Then chose Scopus.
  5. Type in the Search Documents bar what article you would like to find or some key words.
  6. To the right is the Cited by column with a number, which represents the number of citations.  If the number is greater than 0 then you can click on it and it will give you the papers that cited the one you had searched.

How To Find the number of Citations on Web of Science

  1. Go to the CSHL Library website.
  2. From there you can click on Resources.
  3. Then click on Databases & Protocols.
  4. Then chose Web of Science.
  5. Type in the Search Documents bar what article you would like to find or some key words.
  6. To the right of the article is the number of citations.  If you click on the article, to the right, there is an overview of the references.
  7. If you click on the number, the papers that cited the article will be displayed.

How To Find the number of Citations on Google Scholar

  1. Go to the Google Scholar.
  2. Type in the Search Documents bar what article you would like to find or some key words.
  3. Below the article is the number of citations.  It says Cited by...
  4. If you click on the Cited by..., the links of the articles that cited what you searched for will be displayed.
