A guide to setting up, creating, and maintaining biographical sketches for grants.

Overview

You have three options for creating a new biosketch, each of which are detailed below:

Method 1: Create a new biosketch by manually entering the information

  • This will be your starting point if you have never created a biosketch before

Method 2: Make a copy of an existing biosketch

Method 3: Use automated information from an external source

Method 1: Create a new biosketch by manually entering the information

Step 1a. Navigate to SciENcv portal and log in if you are not already. Delegates: be sure to navigate to the documents for the appropriate PI; check for the blue "Delegated Account" banner!

Step 1b. Click the "+ New Document" button.

Step 2.

A dialogue box will come up.

  • Here you can input the document name (the author of this guide also recommends including the date in the title).
  • Select the appropriate document type that you are creating from the dropdown menu.
  • If this is the first biosketch you are ever creating for this profile, you will select "Start with a blank document". Then, click "create".

Step 3. You are now ready to start filling out the information. Please navigate to one of the following to complete the biosketch:

Completing an NIH Biosketch

Completing an NIH Fellowship Biosketch

Completing an NSF Biosketch

Completing an NSF Pending & Current Support Form

Method 2: Make a copy of an existing biosketch

Step 1a. Navigate to SciENcv portal and log in if you are not already. Delegates: be sure to navigate to the documents for the appropriate PI; check for the blue "Delegated Account" banner!

Step 1b. Click the "+ New Document" button.

Step 2.

A dialogue box will come up.

  • Here you can input the document name (the author of this guide also recommends including the date in the title).
  • Select the appropriate document type that you are creating from the dropdown menu.
  • Select the "use an existing document" option under data source and select the appropriate previous biosketch that you would like to use as your source. 
    • Note for the NSF Current and Pending Support Document: you will only be able to copy an existing document if the document is also a NSF Current and Pending Support Document. As of 7/14/2025, you cannot copy another biosketch document format for this type of document. 
  • Then, click "create".

Step 3. You are now ready to start filling out the information.

One note about copied forms: you might get notifications on the new biosketch that certain fields require adjustments for the formatting of the new document. These will be indicated by red exclamation points next to the field. Be sure to go in and edit these adjustments.

Method 3: Use automated information from an external source

Step 1a. Navigate to SciENcv portal and log in if you are not already. Delegates: be sure to navigate to the documents for the appropriate PI; check for the blue "Delegated Account" banner!

Step 1b. Click the "+ New Document" button.

Step 2.

A dialogue box will come up.

  • Here you can input the document name (the author of this guide also recommends including the date in the title).
  • Select the appropriate document type that you are creating from the dropdown menu.
  • Select the "data source" option under data source and select the appropriate option (ORCiD or eRA Commons) as your source. 
  • Then, click "create".

Step 3. You are now ready to start filling out the information. Please navigate to one of the following to complete the biosketch or form:

Completing an NIH Fellowship Biosketch

Completing an NSF Biosketch

Completing an NSF Pending & Current Support Form
