EndNote: Adding references from ISI Web of Science database

How to use EndNote software to save, manage, and print citation information within your papers.

Importing from the ISI Web of Science Databases into EndNote

No database indexes every publication.  We strongly suggest that you search every database in this section of the LibGuide to compile the most complete EndNote libraries.

These directions are similar for both Microsoft and MAC OS.

NOTE: directions for eliminating duplicates, removing references from your library and moving them back in are at the bottom of this page.

 

In Microsoft OS:

1.   Open the EndNote Library into which you want to import references (e.g. Wigler Publications).

 
2.    Access Web of Science database from the Library web site.

3.    Click on the Web of Science tab and do a search

4.    In the Search Results Page the Refine Results box on the left allows you to refine results based on Publication Years, Authors, Subjects and other categories

5.   There are two options for choosing references to export into your EndNote library;

  • If there are only a few references you want to export, click on the box to left of each reference you want to export and click on the EndNote button, click export and allow.  Your references will be exported into your open EndNote library.
  • In this example we have 176 references. To select large numbers of references, or all the references click on the more options link

 

6.    Scroll to the bottom of the page.  In the Output Records box

  • select All records on page or input the range of records (e.g. 1 to 100)
  • Select Authors, Title, Source plus Abstract

7.   click on the EndNote button. Your selected references should be exported to you open EndNote library.

In MAC OS

  • Do step 1 - 6 above 
  • In the savedrecs  window
    • click on Save File if it is not allready selected 
    • click OK
    • name the file (e.g. Wigler papers 01202012) and save it into a known location such as a folder or your desktop
  • click on the EndNote library or group within the library into which you want to import the  references
  • click on File in the top taskbar
  • click on import
  • select the folder you just created (e.g. Wigler papers 01202012)
  • next to Import Options select Web of Science
    • If Web of Science is not listed;
      • click on Other Filters
      • select Web of Science (TS) from the dropdown list
      • click Import

Your records should be listed in the Imported References group in your library as well as the library itself

Eliminating duplicates from your library;

  • Click on References in the top tab
  • Click on Find Duplicates
  • Review and select which one of each duplicate you want to eliminate

Removing references from your library;

  • highlight the references you want to eliminate
  • Click on References in the top tab
  • Click on Move References to Trash

To move references from trash back into your library

  • Click on  the reference(s) in the trash group you want to restore
  • Click on References in the top tab
  • Click on Restore to Library
