Creating Publication and Subject Alerts: Create Alerts in PubMed

Describes how to create author publication and subject alerts so that you can receive alerts by email when an author or subject is published.

About PubMed

Pub Med is an excellent free database of scientific abstracts maintained by the federal government of the United States of America. When available, it links to the full-text version hosted by the publisher or the free full-text version hosted on PubMed Central. Approximately 30,000 journals are included in the PubMed Journals list. PubMed is updated daily.

Sign into PubMed

Go to the library databases page. This page will open in a new tab or window.

From there select PubMed or navigate directly to https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/

  • click on Log In

    • If you have an eRA Commons account you can use that as your sign in

    • Otherwise you must use a federated 3rd party account to create and login to My NCBI. If you are having problems with this step please contact the library. We would be more than happy to assist.

Select which log in type you would like to use. If you already have and eRA commons account that you use to manage My Bibliography, simply sign in with those credentials. Otherwise you can use any of the options presented. Login.gov is a particularly nice option if you do not want to link your personal Gmail account to your PubMed alerts.

Setting Up Alerts

Once you are signed in to your account you are able to set up as many alerts as you need

Begin by typing your search terms (keywords, author names, institution names, etc.) into the box in the middle of the page. From there click the search button

Once you have brought up your list of results, click Create Alert.

Next confirm the settings for your alert. You can choose the frequency of your alert emails or refine your search terms at this stage. When finished be sure to click the Save button at the bottom of the page.
